FAQ:

Q: When we are selecting a Basic Pokemon to put into the Active Position when starting the game, is it before or after we determine who is going first?
A: After you decide who is going first. The Pokemon that you and your opponent select will be placed face down with the rest of the deck randomized for an otherwise normal set-up.

Q. Do Fossil Items count against the total of 6 Basic Pokemon?
A: Fossils are played as Items before they are Basic Pokemon.  All normal Item / Fossil rules will apply. So yes, you can play Fossil Items in your deck and they do not become Basic Pokemon until they are benched.

Q. After you place your Basic Pokemon, if you get another in your starting hand, can you change your mind?
A. No. Your Basic Pokemon will be selected and placed facedown and normal game rules apply. No changes to your Basic Pokemon are allowed after the initial selection. Cards drawn with mulligan will follow the regular rules of being benchable during setup.

Q. Are we required to have a Basic Pokemon in our starting hand after selecting an active Pokemon?
A. No,  you are not required to have an additional Basic Pokemon in your starting hand.

Q. Can we place a Pokemon like Cinderace (MEG 028) in the active position at the start of the game?
A. No. The face down Pokemon is selected before you draw your starting hand. The Pokemon that is placed in the active position before drawing your first 7 cards must be a Basic.
