What is the tournament structure?
The Professor Cup will be run using
Swiss
Pairings. The number of Swiss rounds is dependent upon total attendance, with higher attendance
increasing the number or rounds. Swiss rounds will feature one-game matches and a
30-minute-per-match time limit.
The Swiss rounds of the tournament will be run as
Modified
Constructed
with a twist: players will use 30-card decks rather than the standard 60-card decks. All of the
standard deck construction and game play rules remain the same, with the following exceptions:
- A player’s deck may not contain more than 2 copies of any card, by title, with the exception of
basic Energy cards. - Games are played with 3 Prize cards rather than six.
At the beginning of each round, the judges will leave three
Pokémon TCG booster packs at each match. The winner of the match receives two
boosters, and the loser receives the remaining booster.
After the final round of Swiss, there will be a
Single
Elimination finals with a maximum top cut of 16 players. This portion of the tournament will
use the 2-on-2 Battle format. Details on this format can be found in the
Tournament
Formats document. Players in the Single Elimination finals will be required to
provide their own 60-card decks, which must meet the Modified Constructed rules. Single-elimination
rounds will be a best-of-three game format and will have a 75-minute time limit per match.
Players will be required to provide deck lists for both their 30-card decks and their 60-card
decks upon registration.
At the beginning of each round the judges will leave nine Pokémon TCG booster packs at each
match. The winner of the match receives six boosters, and the loser receives the remaining three
boosters.
