What type of tournament is this?
This will be an Unlimited Constructed non-sanctioned tournament where you will get to compete against your fellow Professors as well as against Wizards of the Coast employees! Each Wizards of the Coast employee that participates will have a bounty placed on him or her. If you meet and manage to defeat any Wizards of the Coast employee during this tournament you will collect their bounty. Bounties can include promo cards, product, and other Pokémon merchandise.

What are the Unlimited format rules?
Unlimited decks may consist of cards from all Pokémon card sets and all promotional cards released by Wizards of the Coast. New card sets are allowed in Unlimited tournaments as soon as the product is available.

The following cards are banned in Unlimited tournaments:

  • The promo card known as “Ancient Mew”
  • _______’s Pikachu (The promo card known as “Birthday Pikachu”)

I have heard that there is a rules change to the game of Pokémon being enforced at these events, what is it?
In working on keeping the Pokémon rules as close as possible to the Japanese rules of the game, there is a new term that will be introduced in a later set this year. This is “Special Conditions”. Asleep, Confusion, Paralysis, POISON, and later on Burned are all defined as Special Conditions. All of these effects are removed from Active Pokémon if they Evolve, Devolve, Leave Play, or are Benched. They ALSO shut off ALL Pokémon Powers on the Pokémon affected by a Special Condition.

This means that Poison (and later on Burned) shut off Pokémon Powers on the Pokémon affected by them. This is a clarification of the rules for Pokémon and WILL take place in all of the upcoming Challenge series events and tournaments.

If a card has a Pokémon Power that lists Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed in its text, just add Poisoned and Burned to it as well.
