What is the tournament structure?

The Professor Cup will be run using
Swiss
Pairings. The number of Swiss rounds is dependent upon total attendance, with higher attendance
increasing the number of rounds. Swiss rounds will feature one-game matches and a
30-minute-per-match time limit.

The Swiss rounds of the tournament will be run as
Modified
Constructed.
In addition to the standard Modified restrictions, a player’s deck may not contain any of the
following cards:

  • Any card marked with a

    rarity symbol
  • Any card with a
Diamond & Pearl Trainer Kit rarity symbol
  • Any Black Star promo card
  • The Victory Medal promo card

At the beginning of each round, the judges will leave three
Pokémon TCG booster packs at each match. The winner of the match receives two
boosters, and the loser receives the remaining booster.

After the final round of Swiss, there will be a
Single
Elimination
finals with a maximum top cut of 16 players. Single-elimination rounds will be a
best-of-three game format and will have a 60-minute time limit per match.

At the beginning of each Single-elimination round the judges will leave nine Pokémon TCG
booster packs at each match. The winner of the match receives six boosters, and the loser receives
the remaining three boosters.

Each player will be required to a provide deck list upon registration.

Wormadam and the Professor Cup

The OP team has had a long discussion about Wormadam and the impact that it had on the European Professor Cup. This event has thrived on being a fun, creative tournament, where players feel comfortable using off the wall decks. That’s what makes the event so enjoyable for so many people, POP staff included.

Considering the options available in the Professor Cup format this year, we don’t see any reasonable, reliable answer to this deck. Our great concern is that we’ll see 95% of the players using this deck, resulting in a terribly uninteresting Professor Cup.

That said, Wormadam Sandy Cloak is not permitted for use at the North American Professor Cup.

The Professor Cup FAQ will be updated tomorrow with this information, and we’ll look at sending out an email blast about this as well. Please distribute this information to as many Professors as you can.

I apologize if this causes players to scramble to build new decks with only a handful of days until the event. We did not make this decision lightly, and we strongly feel that it is for the best.

Thank you for your understanding.
